| Report Summer is here and although it is still early in the season, the East Coast waters are really firing, with average water temperatures of 15 degrees, producing May fly hatches better than we have seen for many years. The Central highlands have had good rains resulting in higher than normal water levels on some lakes and are generally still too cold for any reliable action. These waters will probably be slow up to Christmas. Tooms Lake on the East Coast is the best bet with good dun hatches starting as early as 9AM and the midge hatches are a reliable way to start and finish any day. Both browns and rainbows are switching from midge in the early and late parts of the day to duns during the middle of the day. Much fishing pressure has seen the average size of these fish drop to 2lbs but specimens of 4lbs are still common. Lake Leake is improving and will be in top form by the New Year. This water is still one of the most underrated water in the state. The fish are generally smaller than Tooms but they can be relied on to provide superb midge fishing on most days. The Macquarie river is also firing well with warm temperatures bringing on good hatches. Southern rivers have been very disappointing again this year with smaller whitebait runs and slabby fish in most rivers except when we have been able to find the occasional Atlantic Salmon and a few of the big resident browns. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
